There is a proliferation of leadership books which, while interesting, seldom change the way we act as leaders. Great leadership is like a fingerprint - unique to the individuals who exude it. We can, however, glean much by understanding the great masters of leadership.
Of all the leaders found in the history books, few compare with Ernest Shackleton. Where does one start to describe Shackleton's feat? He saved the lives of the whole Endurance party, living for two years in the harshest environment in the world, with turn-of-the-century equipment. With no support from outside agencies, he managed to make a home on a floating ice shelf. He guided three small life boats, with all his men, to an uninhabited island (Elephant Island). He then set sail, in a small boat, to cross eight hundred miles of the roughest water in the world to land on South Georgia. The last leg was to cross unclimbed mountains and glaciers in an epic thirty-hour traverse, to arrive at the last remnant of civilization.
This webcast is an extract from a whitepaper called Conquest Management – A Guide to the Top, which is available from www.davidparmenter.com. David Parmenter has pulled together much that has been written about Shackleton in a way that can be digested and embedded in daily routines.
