Is retailing falling behind the customer demand curve? Harvard Business Review’s “Zara's Secret for Fast Fashion” states, “By defying conventional wisdom, Zara can design and distribute a garment to market in just fifteen days.” Zara has astutely recognized that the trend envelope is becoming alarmingly short—meaning if you can push speed to market, the customer trend will speed up too.
In retail this accelerating trend concept is not limited to fashion alone—it relates to consumer electronics, automotive, service sector retailing (i.e., bricks & mortar financial service outlets), and even home décor.
As customers expect new products, current fashions and innovative foods to be immediately available, retailers are faced with a bevy of challenges. Inventory must meet demand to prevent out-of-stocks, yet avoid the challenges of storewide clearances and markdowns. They need a direct connection with what their customers are likely to purchase today while planning for tomorrow. They also need an environment that can keep pace with shifting consumer trends, shopping patterns and product expectations. To do this, information silos between design and analytics must be integrated into a fluid process for retailers to profit from new trends and gain new generations of buyers—or lose to the competition.
