"We want to create a better HR performance management system but are unclear how best to achieve that. We have heard that the Balanced Scorecard is a methodology that organisations have used in the past to good effect - can this help?"
This was the question posed by one UK insurance company based in the City of London. As the UK arm of a large Japanese industrial and service sector giant, they had been established as a top end high service quality insurer tasked with getting a foothold in the vast UK Lloyds of London regulated insurance market.
Their issue was that post 9/11 they had grown so fast that the management team no longer felt in control. They continued to be very financially successful, but their success had resulted in areas where they felt they could improve. In essence, they needed a better system of aligning staff behind organisational and departmental goals and creating a culture of rewarding top performers with top financial rewards. They did not want to become lazy! The reality was that, before any staff could set objectives, some questions needed to be answered: what were the organisations objectives going forward and how could they be made relevant to the various teams within the organisation?
This presentation looks at how the popular management of Balanced Scorecard (or rather a modern version of Balanced Scorecard, known as 3rd Generation Balanced Scorecard) was used to good effect to inform the HR-driven objective setting and appraisal process. In addition, the presentation will look at the process integrated and aligned corporate, team and individual objectives.
