Program content
In public sector organizations the infrastructure of Information Technology (IT) is a capital-intensive production facility that produces information. Sid Finehirsh, an expert in IT costing systems, will explore the concept of a public sector organization's IT department as an information factory. This seminar will provide the opportunity for government organizations to learn best practices and proven methods for measuring the value of IT and associated costs. In addition, he'll address the role of the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) as a financial management processing standard to facilitate IT costing.
The information factory metaphor allows us to go beyond simply making the case against simple allocations and begin to analyze costing methodologies. This seminar will examine the advantages and disadvantages of several IT costing methods used by public sector organizations including simple allocations, usage-costing, and activity-based costing. Do these methods give a true picture of the costs of producing information in the organization's information factory?
Finehirsh will describe how integrating usage-based and activity-based costing can provide government departments and agencies with a powerful analytic solution for understanding the IT process, its value and the way IT can deliver cost effective services.
